WHAT IS LIFESTYLE MEDICINE?

In September 2018 I read a book that changed my life.  How Not to Die opened my eyes to plant-based nutrition and the prevention and treatment of disease.  It was in the midst of reading this book that I committed to a whole-food, plant-based diet and the study of Lifestyle Medicine.  In this specialty, the treatment of disease is focused on the WHOLE person - what we eat, what we do, and how we interact with other people.  It focuses on a whole-food, plant-based diet, physical activity, sleep and stress-management as medical treatments.  Once I started to dig deep into these recommendations, I found a whole world of scientific information supporting their use.

I have now devoted much of my time to studying these principles.  My goals are to treat the underlying causes of disease in order to help people to get off of medications and live longer, healthier lives.

What if your diabetes could be reversed just by changing how you eat?

What if your genes are not your destiny?

We are not all doomed.  But we must change the way we live.

Summer Lovin'

OMG. As my first summer WFPB, I am absolutely loving this season. With all of the fresh fruits and vegetables available I have been in heaven!

Last winter I signed up for my first CSA. If you have never heard of or used a CSA - here's the scoop. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In a CSA a farm sells "shares" to customers who then are guaranteed fresh produce throughout the growing season (23 weeks!). Having a CSA helps the farm plan and grow for the upcoming season and keeps our local farmers in business. I signed my family up for the CSA at one of our local farms, Harvest Valley and in return get to choose from a variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables each week. It has been phenomenal! So much so that many of my meals have turned from cooked and prepared items to a plate full of cool, refreshing goodness picked right from the farm. All you need to do is slice a tomato, a cucumber and a peach and voila, you have a beautiful meal.

Our family has also been blessed with many wild black raspberry bushes that line our backyard. Every year my oldest son and I look forward picking and eating as many black raspberries as possible. Berries are one of the best foods we can consume. They are high in antioxidants, low in calories and have been shown to have many benefits. In our house we eat them straight from the bush or in a bowl with a spoon. They rarely make it in to a muffin or a compote for pancakes because they're scarfed up so quickly.

I also wanted to share this amazing recipe of potato salad from Clean Food Dirty Girl. I added some homemade pickles (cucumbers care of my CSA!) for some tang and crunch but I definitely was not missing the mayo, eggs or bacon from this dish.

I hope you all are enjoying the fruits of summer as much as I am!
