WHAT IS LIFESTYLE MEDICINE?

In September 2018 I read a book that changed my life.  How Not to Die opened my eyes to plant-based nutrition and the prevention and treatment of disease.  It was in the midst of reading this book that I committed to a whole-food, plant-based diet and the study of Lifestyle Medicine.  In this specialty, the treatment of disease is focused on the WHOLE person - what we eat, what we do, and how we interact with other people.  It focuses on a whole-food, plant-based diet, physical activity, sleep and stress-management as medical treatments.  Once I started to dig deep into these recommendations, I found a whole world of scientific information supporting their use.

I have now devoted much of my time to studying these principles.  My goals are to treat the underlying causes of disease in order to help people to get off of medications and live longer, healthier lives.

What if your diabetes could be reversed just by changing how you eat?

What if your genes are not your destiny?

We are not all doomed.  But we must change the way we live.

High Blood Pressure and Medication Recalls

Today I noticed in my Facebook feed yet another medication recall for a blood pressure medication. Lately it seems there is one every week. Not to mention the side effects. Frequently I titrate, adjust and change people's medications because of side effects or intolerances. From swollen legs and swollen lips to dry mouth, dizziness and kidney effects, there is not one without its risks. It is also very common for a person to need not one but three or four different meds to get their blood pressure into that 120/80 range.

What really pains me is all the benefit these people could potentially gain from switching to a WFPB diet. The video below from Dr. Michael Greger goes through some of the evidence. I urge anyone suffering from high blood pressure and/or taking medications to consider at least trying a diet change. Please also do this under the supervision of a doctor as the effects could be dramatic and medications need to be adjusted accordingly.

Not everyone may be able to stop their medications all together, but any decrease in usage can be beneficial for preventing side effects, lowering exposure risk, and of course saving money on prescription meds.
