WHAT IS LIFESTYLE MEDICINE?

In September 2018 I read a book that changed my life.  How Not to Die opened my eyes to plant-based nutrition and the prevention and treatment of disease.  It was in the midst of reading this book that I committed to a whole-food, plant-based diet and the study of Lifestyle Medicine.  In this specialty, the treatment of disease is focused on the WHOLE person - what we eat, what we do, and how we interact with other people.  It focuses on a whole-food, plant-based diet, physical activity, sleep and stress-management as medical treatments.  Once I started to dig deep into these recommendations, I found a whole world of scientific information supporting their use.

I have now devoted much of my time to studying these principles.  My goals are to treat the underlying causes of disease in order to help people to get off of medications and live longer, healthier lives.

What if your diabetes could be reversed just by changing how you eat?

What if your genes are not your destiny?

We are not all doomed.  But we must change the way we live.

School Broccoli

Transitioning myself to a WFPB diet has been admittedly easy. Sure I'm busy finding new recipes and trying new things, but in general I've always loved fruits and vegetables and have been able to find some great ideas. My children, however, have been a different story. Trying to get an already picky 3 yo and a 5 yo to try new foods has been a struggle. Every. Day. Even when the "new" food consists of foods that they already know and love. Bean and corn chili? Yes, please! Bean and corn enchiladas? No way! There have been many tears and pleas to "Never make this again, Mommy!"

School Broccoli

The one "win" that we've had since transitioning - ALMOND MILK. Apparently it tastes like chocolate milk. Who know. I was also able to find some lentil pasta that they like and will eat. I was starting to become disheartened UNTIL...

It recently came to my attention, that some of the things that my boys hate at home, they EAT at school. SAY WHAT?! Matthew, my 5 year old, has never eaten a single tree of broccoli at my house. Raw, steamed, roasted. Never. But SCHOOL BROCCOLI?? That's a different story.

Home Broccoli

So I asked this teacher the other day what kind of broccoli they prepared at school. The term she used was "EXTRA STEAMED." So I'll keep you guys updated. Tonight, I'm going to make Extra Steamed School Broccoli, and we'll see how it goes. The moral of this story - kids don't make any sense and they are stubborn as heck. But I can only hope that repeated exposure to "new" foods will convince them to taste and enjoy!
